Blog Post Eight: Bringing it Together
For this last blog post, we really put it all together. Throughout the course, we studied the developmental process for the human body as we progressively age. This last chapter we examined how to put the theories into practice by constructing meaning out of the facts that were presented in the text. “The concepts of informal inquiry and the more formal action research are two ways people may choose to explore and apply lifespan theories” (Fiore, 2011). These concepts forced me to further analyze the findings of the text. Over the last century, lifespan development has experienced a lot of growth and change. This can be notably seen with the rise of social media and the world wide web. All content put onto the web can be seen by the public and all information across multiple sources can be shared instantaneously. Therefore, increasing human’s ability to interact with each other. From my point of view, this can be a startling idea because any person of any age can access a plethora of content that is for all viewers or extremely graphic.
With the rise in technology, professionalism has also changed in the field of lifespan development. By having all of your personal information on social media, a human resources representative can easily access your profile to gain insight into your life. This can be a make or break when it comes to being hired for a job so it is important to be wise as to what one posts on their accounts. More importantly, in a job setting it can benefit a manager to have an in-depth knowledge of lifespan development to make intrapersonal connections with employees based on their personal life and make job adjustments accordingly. Being in management at UPS, I will be able to benefit from knowing different stages in development to help assist and connect with employees on a day to day basis. I can also help advocate these people based on their needs. Having a happy and healthy working environment is important to one’s success and more importantly, developing relationships with people that last. I make it a point at work to tell my employees that I care more about their wellbeing and safety then producing for the company. Although we do specialize in processing a costumer’s parcel, developing that sense of compassion between one another can go a long way in the workplace.
Legislation has also changed over time within the lifespan development field. “The Individuals with Disabilities Education Act (IDEA) is the law that specifies rights and guidelines for students in the United States who require special education services” (Fiore, 2011). This act has greatly improved a person’s ability to receive what they need to have a successful educational path. Regardless of the disability, it is important that we all have equal opportunity to grow and develop in life. From an educational standpoint, this act has allowed such opportunity to happen.
